Member Spotlight: Kenneth Boyer

Name: Kenneth Boyer

Title: Director of Business Development

Firm: Douglas Wood Associates, Inc.

SMPS Chapter: South Florida

Number of years in the A/E/C industry: 15 years

Why did you join SMPS? I wanted to join a community where I’d be exposed to passionate and like-minded leaders in the A/E professions, and I am fortunate to have a number of respected friends and colleagues who are members, particularly the amazing Susan Hernandez.

What is the most important thing you’ve gained from joining SMPS?
The opportunity to develop personally and professionally along with strengthening current relationships and developing new ones.

How did you get into the A/E/C industry?
After the army, I took an administrative position with Douglas Wood Associates (structural engineers), and this year will be my 15th year with DWA.  I’ve worked hard and my role and responsibilities have evolved and grown along with the firm.

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make?
Seeing our projects, I’ve felt a tangible sense of accomplishment and pride in enhancing the community.  Three of the first dates I took my wife on were to our completed projects here in South Florida – our new art museum, a comedy club and a park.  I fell in love with views and backdrops my firm designed.

What is one thing that might surprise people to know about you?
My great grandfather fought in the Civil War.  Not my great great great grandfather.  Here’s hoping the longevity gene passed down to me.

If you could learn anything what would it be?
The perfect advice to give my unborn son (and he’s coming soon, May 2015).

What is the last book (or newspaper, magazine) you read?
I have a soft spot for science fiction and just re-read The Hunger Games series.

What is your favorite book or movie and why?
I’ve been a ravenous reader almost all of my life, and my favorite book is The Stand by Stephen King.   Exceptionally compelling and terrifying tale of the struggle of good versus evil set in an apocalyptic world.

When you were little, who was your favorite superhero and why?
I loved Batman.  No powers, no magic ring.  Just hard work.

How do you enjoy your free time?
I’m happiest when I’m surrounded by my family and friends at a BBQ.  That’s the reward:  Community.
