Name: Monica R. Massana

Title: Marketing Manager

Firm: Cherokee Enterprises, Inc.

SMPS Chapter: South Florida

Number of years in the A/E/C industry: 8 years.

Why did you join SMPS? I joined SMPS in 2009, just 2 years after coming on board at Cherokee. I joined SMPS to connect with my peers in the industry. It was important that I start to create relationships that would allow me to share ideas, ask for advice, and most importantly grow my network.

What is the most important thing you’ve gained from joining SMPS?
I would say the abundant amount of resources available on the mysmps site. From the webinars, member directory and chapter events, SMPS really offers a wealth of marketing and business development knowledge to its members.

How did you get into the A/E/C industry?
I did not intentionally decide I would pursue a career in the A/E/C industry. I was actually working for a university and had recently graduated, so I did what any new graduate would do and sent my resume to every company out there. Eight years later, and here I am. I love my job and the industry; best move ever!

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make?
I love being a part of a team that does good and honest work. It's also exciting to have some responsibility in bringing in new work for the firm, it's what I love the most about my job.

What is one thing that might surprise people to know about you?
During college I wrote a series of short stories, hoping one day I'd be published. I still have hope!

If you could learn anything what would it be?
I would like to learn to speak several languages fluently. I could travel to any country, work anywhere and have zero language barriers.

What is the last book (or newspaper, magazine) you read?
I read news articles daily from all sorts of outlets, but the very last book I read was "Lean In," by Sheryl Sandberg.

What is your favorite book or movie and why?
My favorite book has to be "To Kill a Mockingbird." I love this book because it is told by a child's perspective and how their innocence clouds most heavy subjects. The book does an amazing job of allowing the reader to remember what it's like to be a child again.

When you were little, who was your favorite superhero and why?
Probably Inspector Gadget, must've been those go-go gadget arms!

How do you enjoy your free time?
I enjoy my free time with my 18 month old son by either visiting museums or other kid-friendly events.
