Member Spotlight: Christine Rizzo Corrigan

Name: Christine Rizzo Corrigan

Title: Marketing Manager

Firm: Hedrick Brothers Construction

SMPS Chapter: South Florida

Why did you join SMPS?

In 2004, I joined SMPS to learn more about the proposal and presentation process for construction management firms.  I needed to learn how others in my position navigated the process, their best practices (and frustrations), and overall how their role contributed to the success of their respective firms.

What is the most important thing you’ve gained from joining SMPS?

That I was not alone in my position!  SMPS provides programs and education opportunities for their members to succeed in a highly-competitive environment. I have received industry-related educational and professional development materials; attended chapter/regional meetings, national conferences and relevant webinars; and developed professional mentors, associates and friendships.

How did you get into the A/E/C industry?

My first industry role was as a Project Coordinator for Alamo’s Construction Division (DKBERT) in Ft. Lauderdale.  I then took a position with Hedrick Brothers Construction in West Palm Beach as Office Manager.  Now with Hedrick Brothers for 15+ years, I am honored to be part of the team that has contributed to its growth, diversity and efficiency.  My responsibilities include strategic proposal and presentation development, corporate marketing, public relations, and community outreach.

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make?

In one way or another, I touch nearly every project that comes through our doors – whether it be through a qualifications proposal, bid, RFQ/RFP response or presentation – I’m involved.

What is one thing that might surprise people to know about you?

I’m going to skydive over the Rocky Mountains, even though I really don’t like heights!

If you could learn anything what would it be?

On the professional side, I’m always interested in leadership development and personal growth.  Through SMPS networking, I continually learn AEC best practices while expanding industry contacts.  I am consistently challenged to keep my technical and interpersonal skills sharp, and I consult with a network of individuals who are experts in their respective fields for advice and consultancy.  On the personal side, I always wanted to play the piano, but now I want to learn to paint.

What is the last book (or newspaper, magazine) you read?

I enjoy “can’t put it down” books, such as James Patterson’s novels.

What is your favorite book or movie and why?

I’d have to say Les Misérables.  I have read the 1,500 page unabridged edition and condensed versions, seen the musical several times, and know all the music.  I love the story of how an individual, no matter their past, can rise up and live a meaningful life.  Jean Valjean was a servant leader before that term was popular!

When you were little, who was your favorite superhero and why?

I really didn’t have a superhero as a child.  Looking back, family was always important to me and that certainly continues today.  My husband of 25+ years and our daughters are my true superheros.  Our oldest daughter is a Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, and our youngest daughter played Division I volleyball and is entering her senior year in college.

How do you enjoy your free time?

Now an empty-nester, my husband and I enjoy college football and all the exciting activities that South Florida offers throughout the year.  We love to travel and have visited most of the United States and Caribbean islands.  Europe is next!
